The 'Kara' design was the first new, large Soviet surface warship
in many years, and was evidently intended to boost blue-water ASW capabilities.
Although often grouped with cruisers, these ships are destroyers by role. The
Kara-class was a further development of the the Kresta-II design, with gas-turbines
replacing the steam plants of the previous classes, resulting in major modifications
to the layout of the midships section. Although larger than the Kresta-II cruiser
and with significant anti-air and anti-submarine capabilities, these ships are
classified as destroyers rather than cruisers by the Russian Navy. In total on
Project 1134B 7 ships were constructed, 4 of which served on the Black Sea fleet.
Large ASW Destroyer "Ochakov": laid down 19.12.1969 at a factory
of a name 61 Kommunara in Nikolayev and 25.12.1969 is enlisted in the lists of
the ships of the Naval Fleet. Launched 30.04.1971, commissioned 04.11.1973 . and
28.11.1973 is switched on in structure of the Black Sea fleet. Repeatedly
participated in the various ocean and sea doctrines, battle services in the Mediterranean
sea. Was in structure 30-th brigade of the surface ships of the Black Sea fleet.
The ship has made 9 battle campaigns, “Ocean - 75”, “Crimea - 76” participated
in the doctrines. In 1986 "Ochakov" was announced by the best ship of Soviet Naval
Fleet. 14.06 - 19.06.1978 - visit to Latania (Syria); 13.04 - 18.04.1979
- in Rieka (Yugoslavia); 11.06 - 16.06.1979 - in Toulon (France); 10.08
- 13.08.1979 - in Varna (Bulgaria); 20.10 - 24.10.1986 - in Havana (Cuba);
26.03 - 31.03.1987 - in Istanbul (Turkey); 26.10 - 30.10.1987 - in Split (Yugoslavia);
24.08 - 28.04.1989 - in Constance (Romania); 08.05 - 12.05.1990 - in Split
(Yugoslavia); 11.06 - 14.06.1990 - in Tarano (Italy). In the period
since 26.03.1980 for 18.07.1984 has repair in Sevastopol. At the end of 80-th
years the factory repair of the ship began, however in connection with disintegration
USSR he was not finished. The fire in 1993 on his board considerably has complicated
"Ochakov" technical condition. Ship (after end of repair and modernization)
is planned to input in Black Sea fleet in 2004-2005 years. 20.08.2011, the
large anti-submarine ship "Ochakov" was decommissioned from the Russian
Navy. 05.03.2014, the hull of the ship had been taken away by tugs from
Sevastopol bay.
